KEVIN TEME For
the first time, Papua New Guinea will witness an Anglican priest, Father David
Smith, also known as the Fighting Father Dave, take on local boxer from Wanigela
Luke Baro in Saturdays first-ever Oceania Professional Boxing championships. One
wonders as to why a priest is getting involved in the boxing contest but the Sydney-based
Anglican parish priest has something to share and hopes the sport of boxing can
be a tool for change. When
asked about being a priest and involving in professional boxing, Smith said he
got involved in the sport to change ways and lives of the people around him. I
spent 28 years of my life as a parish priest in Sydney. I was in Sydneys
south before I was moved to Dulwich Hill (Sydneys inner-west) where that
place or area was rife for drugs. I began teaching and working with young people
with drug problems and opened the church hall as an area where local youths could
do fitness and martial arts training, Smith said after arriving in the country. Smith
visited Wanigela village at Koki in Moresby South electorate yesterday to meet
his opponent for the exhibition show and was humbled with the welcome and gesture
given by the people in his short visit. I
see sports particularly boxing, as a way to change youths and being a priest,
I made my first appearance as a professional boxer to earn something and give
it back to the youth centre to help these youths to help them train and be disciplined,
Smith said. I
was a rough kid back then but having me here is to work with people to help them
change course to be better people in life and I believe boxing can do that. Despite
it being an exhibition match against PNGs Baro, the fighting priest said
he was looking forward to the bout. The
event will also feature two international fights with the main bout between Manus
refugee Ezatullah Kakar, the former Pakistani martial arts champion taking on
PNG champion John Korake. Patron
Ben Micah said the two international professional boxers from Indonesia will arrive
today. We will also have undercard bouts to support the main event and
we excited about this first ever Oceania Professional boxing tournament to be
hosted here in Port Moresby, the former Kavieng MPsaid. Tickets
are selling for K30 outer stand while K100 is set for the ring side. Tickets
can be obtained by calling the organisers on 74878348. *click
