The
famous Hollywood sign by
Greg Tingle
It's
the same in most parts of the western world. Every media outlet is looking to
get an exclusive, but in the age of internet publications and citizen journalism,
getting the exclusive can be tricky. Rupert
Murdoch from News Corp famously said 'Big will not beat small any more. It will
be the fast beating the slow", which is true to a large degree, however for
some news stories big $ still counts, even though in a perfect media world, news
shouldn't be about who has the biggest financial resources. It should be about
journalism and integrity of a news story. A
benefit of a media war of sorts is that the consumer, in this case, the reader,
be it via internet or print, is the winner. There is diversity in news, even though
the Hollywood PR spinners can pitch out their press releases, the media editors
and their journalist underlings can put their own take on it, or as we know, sometimes
The News can be a bit of an Inside Job.. a tightly stage managed, news managed
bundle where the outcome and any repercussions of a news story is pretty much
known before the story goes live. Yes
media friends, the news business is quite an interesting animal, but sometimes
things can go a bit AWOL or pear shaped, Just ask a few folks ranging from the
likes of Donald Trump and the First Lady, Kardashians, Caitlyn Jenner (the person
formally known as Bruce), O.J Simpson, Woody Allen, Rolf Harris, and most infamously
of them all - Harvey Weinstein. Well done to Paris Hilton for turning her style
of news story around at TMZ. It look a while but the sun is shining a lot brighter
for Paris these days. Could all be part of what we might call The Weinstein Effect.
Harvey has become quite the whipping boy of Hollywood, and most other personalities
are smelling like roses compared to the Big HW. Fortunately,
TMZ, the outlet responsible for more Hollywood
scoops than any other newsroom on the planet, also covers quite a lot of positive
and light news stories, so its not just 'dirt' stories. Let's
not also forget the connection between celebrity and sports, and TMZ has their
TMZ Sports arm, which we're sure you've heard of. We're big fans of them by the
way, but our friends over at the WWE would be
mega fans by all accounts, with many balanced and positive based stories being
pumped out in recent years. It's the sort of coverage any professional wrestling
company could only dream of, and in the WWE's case, is most certainly Sports Entertainment,
and we are loving it. Closely
following the WWE for interesting, newsy and pretty credible sports related stories
would be the mixed martial arts powerhouse, UFC (Ultimate
Fighting Championship), but as the world knows, one Conor McGregor's antics
earlier this year brought upon a boat load of not so positive news stories. Geez
McGregor had a bad day when he threw the chair at the bus. Pre meditated or a
brain snap - probably only McGregor knows for sure, but his sports news following
the incident gave some of the usual celeb suspects a bit of a breather. Make
no mistake, media can be a tool - in more ways than one. How about the rough patch
that Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee has had to endure, especially this year, with
all sorts of stories about his social media accounts being taken over, then more
recently men with guns on his premises, and so the dramas go on. We publicly wish
Stan the very best with a resolution to the headaches that have plagued him for
much of this year. It was such a pleasure to meet Stan The Man on one of his former
visits to Sydney. To
