Bill Leak was one of the world's great cartoonists, satirists and provocateurs, in my estimation. He helped make the news interesting, funny, and often told some hard truths in the process. While his views may have sometimes been controversial, he ignited conversation in cafes and boardrooms across Australia, if not the world. Like many a great artist, he told stories using art, when his words would sometimes not had seen the light of day, under the News Corp machine, or not. Sometimes we agreed with him, sometimes not, but the loss to the news world and freedom of speech realm can not by overstated. He was a great one. Friend or foe, sometimes both, he left a massive void to fill, and hopefully The Australian cartoonists, and the political cartoonist world can only hope to pick up the ball (or cricket bat), and run with it.
