Proving yourself worthy as a lifeguard on Bondi Beach is no simple matter. Kyle Pao, who has come to Bondi on an month-long exchange program from Hawaii, is put through a series of tests by the local boys before he can start patrolling the famous sands.

Just off the plane, the Bondi lads feed Kyle a meat pie, then put a schooner of beer in one hand and make sure he can still catch a football in the other. Not only does he catch the ball as it rockets down from the heavens, he rescues the beer as well.

It's a good sign but Kyle shows he's got other skills too, including the ability to paddle to a floundering swimmer and arrive before a jet ski. Life on the couch has never felt safer.
