About
Buy From The Bush
Buy
From The Bush was created on 16th October, 2019 and
began as an Instagram account showcasing the beautiful
things available to buy from rural communities facing
drought. The account called on city friends to look
to the bush for their Christmas shopping and by so
doing, invest in keeping rural communities alive through
the drought. Seven weeks later it had over 130,000
followers and had increased rural postage figures
by 40%. It seemed the city heard the call for help
and as Slim Dusty would say provided a flood
of human kindness directed at small bush businesses.
Buy
From the Bush aims to connect bush businesses with
city customers. It celebrates the creativity, productivity,
innovation and resilience of rural communities. It
is proof that outcome-focused, community driven change
can have a real impact. It is also evidence that urban
and rural communities are connected, never more profoundly,
than in times of crisis.
The
investment from city customers has been transformative.
Stock is selling out. Many creators and makers are
developing new relationships with wholesalers and
stockists. Rural Australia Post franchises are selling
out of parcels due to the increased postage demand.
Small businesses are paying casuals to support the
increase in sales. Businesses have reported growing
their social media following by more than 4000 in
three weeks. In real terms, that is 4000 new potential
customers in the long term. For many, Buy From The
Bush has meant that they will keep their doors open
for at least a little longer. For others, it means
that they can pay their familys household bills
this month.
More
than the financial investment, the psychological impact
of city customers buying in to these bush
businesses at a time like this, is possibly the biggest
success of the Buy From The Bush campaign. Shop owners
have had teary and real conversations with customers
over the phone. The connectedness between city and
country has brought new hope and energy to many.
To quote one business owner: when I look
back at this drought, one thing Ill remember
most is the warm and fuzzy feelings this campaign
has brought. At a time like this, warm
and fuzzies are more precious than gold.
About
the Founder
After
working in community development for years, more recently
Grace has been working as the Co-Founder of a startup
business called AgDraft, an online employment platform
for agriculture. While community development taught
her the power of community-driven change, the start-up
world taught her to define the problem (the need)
and develop a solution (the product). Buy From The
Bush is a direct result of these two (very distinct)
working backgrounds coming together.
She is a mother of (almost) four kids and lives on
a sheep and cropping farm in Warren, NSW. I
have watched my husband work through this drought
feeling very helpless. I am pretty ordinary (read
hopeless) in the sheepyards. All my prayers have not
made it rain. My weak consoling conversation at the
dinner table has seemed redundant. Yet, I have desperately
wanted to define the problem and create a solution.
She
credits the idea for Buy From The Bush to her friend
Nicki, who planted the seed by telling her that her
family were doing a buy from the bush
Kris Kringle theme.
