Cronulla has been voted Sydney's
third most popular beach, with many fancied eastern
and northern beaches left splashing behind.
Not
surprisingly, iconic Bondi finished first in the
poll held last month for Sydney Chamber of Commerce.
Bondi
gained 36 per cent of the vote, followed by Manly
(22 per cent) and Cronulla (19 per cent). Bronte
(12 per cent) was fourth and Palm Beach (10 per
cent) finished fifth.
The
chamber's survey, Sydney's Favourite Things, has
been held annually for several years, but this
was the first time people were asked to nominate
their favourite beach.
A
total of 401 people were interviewed in the Sydney
CBD. Seventy-six per cent were Sydney residents,
6 per cent from other parts of NSW, 7 per cent
from interstate and 11 per cent from overseas.
Cronulla
Chamber of Commerce president, Rob Stanley-Jones,
said it was a fantastic result.
"It's
great for our suburb and for our shire. The council
obviously has been doing the right thing in promoting
the area. Who knows, next year we might be second
or first," Mr Stanley-Jones said.
Lifesaver
Anthony Lyon, who has been a member of the Cronulla
club for more than 10 years, was not the slightest
bit surprised at the high ranking.
"It's
a good family beach, and a great place for people
who like exercising," Mr Lyon said.
In
other survey results, the Rocks was voted the
most popular part of the city and best restaurant
area.
Australia
Day was seen as Sydney's best party, the Botanical
Gardens as the favourite park, Opera House as
the best attraction and New Year's Day cricket
as the favourite sporting event.
