ESPN’s recently launched and much reported on ESPN+ streaming service is adding e-sports to its already impressive portfolio offering. The firm has announced that it will broadcast live coverage of numerous League of Legends competitions this summer, beginning 16th June with the 2018 North American League of Legends Championship Series Summer Split (NA LCS). Following will the NA LCS Summer Finals in September and then the League of Legends World Championship.

The business deal between ESPN and Riot Games is non-exclusive, which means for punters you can stream multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title on Twitch. For free. By all accounts ESPN is forecasting that covering e-sports will help bring in more subscribers for the still-new $4.99/month ESPN+ service. ESPN+ includes thousands of hours of live events from various sports leagues throughout the year, original programming, and an ad-free experience when using the ESPN website and app. Subscribers aren’t constantly bombarded with annoying video ads or other advertising messages.

Riot Games advises that the 2017 LoL World Championship drew “80 million unique viewers tuning in for a single match.” Fans of the game watched over 1.2 billion hours of video during the event.

Riot and BAMTech, the technology platform of Disney that built the technology behind ESPN+, have been business partners since 2016 when the two companies inked a $300 million deal to have BAMTech stream League of Legends competitions. Back in November, Riot announced changes to its North America competition slate that resulted in the creation of permanent teams; several of them are backed or owned by big-league sports teams including the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors.

BAMTech is also the company behind the now world famous WWE Network, WWE understood to be the first sports entertainment (pro wrestling) company to launch a dedicated streaming channel. Since then numerous wrestling companies followed suit including Impact Wrestling, New Japan Pro-Wrestling and All Japan Pro Wrestling.

In more gaming - pro wrestling cross over news, WWE living legend John Cena is tipped for the lead in Duke Nukem. This follows the mega success of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in Rampage, and New Japan Pro Wrestling megastar Kenny Omega is booked for Florida's annual CEO Gaming commencing 29th June.

MMA powerhouse the UFC offers subscription service UFC Fight Pass and Australia's AFL offers AFL Live Pass and NRL offers NRL Live Pass. Telstra mobile customers can access NRL Live Pass at no charge, with is otherwise valued at $99.99.

Australian and American fans may be wondering what all the League Of Legends hype is all about. On the other hand, those in China and familiar with Chinese gaming culture already know. Riot Games advises the 2017 League of Legends World Championship held in China drew a record peak of 80 million unique viewers who tuned in for a single match while fans overall watched over 1.2 billion hours of content during the event.

In line with the growing popularity of eSports the Media Man Group has expanded its social media channels with dedicated Facebook sites, Media Man Gaming, Media Man Games and Media Man Sports.
