I
find culture a fascinating thing, and I suspect many
of the world's citizens do. My favourite culture by
a country mile is that of Australia. In particular,
beach culture, surf culture, and the culture of giving
people a fair go. Also the culture of appreciating
our beautiful country and how about the amazing animals
and marine life. Then there's the rainforests, the
countryside, and we have an eclectic mix of restaurants
and dining options, so blessed we are.
Here
'down under' in Australia we are constantly told that
we are a multicultural society, and I supposed we
are (these days). One other thing, I think Australian's
don't like to be told what to think etc. We are smart
enough to know our country has many other cultures
now here, so all the politicians can stop preaching
it. From Palm Beach to Maroubra, to Cronulla, we get
it ok Parliament House. We are all Australians, but
we are not all 'One Nation' (the political party).
Maroubra has a bit of a sub culture of Bra Zillions,
that's Brazilian heritage surf culture lovers, including
some amazing surfers, but let's get back on track
to the Australian - Oriental theme for now...
In
our chosen fields of media, entertainment, advertising,
events and the like, we frequently explore culture,
sub cultures, deal with people from all part of the
world and so on, and I thought it was about time that
we had a closer look at Japan as well as checking
out some of the rest of the Asia Pacific, albeit via
the internet for now. Yeah, I've been to Asia over
a decade ago (Thailand to be specific), but for the
moment our Asian exploration will be online, with
or without the assistance of Google Maps, Google Earth,
Facebook, Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet, National Geographic
or other.
I
love Japanese people. My experience is that they are
quite a bit like Aussie's. Fun loving, hard working,
play hard and generous of heart and spirit. Actually,
that's my experience with Indonesians / Balinese also.
I did enjoy my trips to Thailand over a decade ago,
however my personal expedience and belief is that
Thai's haven't embraced Australian culture and values
as well as most, and seem to want to retain their
Thai roots. My feeling is that if you are an Aussie,
or are living down under on Australian soil, embrace
our culture and values, respect our country and citizens,
and integrate in a very positive way - many point
to the way that European's embraced Australia when
they made the transition over back circa 60's to 80's.
I used to work with a lot of the European migrants
on the Sydney Water Board, and they were so appreciative
to live in Australia and they frequently shared their
joy with others, and at the same time fully embraced
and respected Australia.
Japan
Growing
up and attending primarily school was my first introduction
to Japan. We has a Japanese school student, Efron
I believe was his name. He was a good kid and fitted
in well by all accounts.
Many
years later via the power of VHS tape and television
screen I witnessed the historic 1976 wrestler / martial
artist vs boxer match: Antonio Inoki vs Muhammad Ali.
Inoki brought the fight to Ali, but the rules were
such that the two combatants were not able to have
the classic match that many would have hoped for.
Years later I saw the tape of 'The Great Muta' vs
American wrestling legend, Hulk Hogan, and I would
say its fair to call it a wrestling classic, at least
in that era. Then I discovered Pancrase Hybrid Fighting
/ Wrestling, the UWF and the extremely violent FMW.
The realistic style of Pancrase and to a lesser extent,
the Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF), impressed
me greatly.
Circa
2005 I did some media and promotions work for Pancrase
Hybrid Wrestling in Sydney, Australia, which saw the
promotion do a show at UNSW at Randwick, just on the
edge of the campus which adjoins to Kensington. The
show was great however Australia was not quite ready
for the strong style and more realistic type matches,
and crowd numbers were not what we expected, nor was
mainstream media all over it the way that they are
for UFC. These days Bellator struggles for Australian
news media coverage also, whilst New Japan is getting
what I would call a warm like reception, but not quite
hot either. WWE is still the benchmark for pro wrestling,
due to their headstart and massive marketing and media
machine, not to mention their extensive rooster of
hundreds of professional wrestlers (sports entertainers).
Fast
forward to the present and the WWE's Shinsuke Nakamura
has been extremely impressive lately, and I do hope
that he wins the championship at WrestleMania. Perhaps
part of the reason for the extra promotion of Mr Nakamura
is the ever looming presence of New Japan Pro Wrestling,
which Chris Jericho recently did a tour of duty with
locking horns in a classic with 'The Cleaner' Kenny
Omega. The other main event on the card was Kazuchika
Okada defending the IWGP Heavyweight Championship
against the winner of the 2017 G1 Climax, Tetsuya
Naito. Nakamura is a keen surfer, which he gets extra
points from me on.
Oh,
a Japanese based bitcoin exchange recently gave folks
their money / Bitcoin back, after the exchange was
hacked. That's goodwill for you.
Godzilla
is probably Japans most famous movie creation. I love
'Tiger Mark'.

Indonesia
A
beautiful people. I've never been to Bali, but the
Balinese I know in Australia are beautiful people.
They have adapted to the Australian way of life so
well, and of course their food is amazing. Many actually
love beach culture and quite a few of them took to
surfing, as in the case with the Japanese who call
Australian home.
China
Um,
the Korean president Kim gets a lot of bad press.
Is that because he's a bad dude, or because United
States President Donald Trump is his nemeses and has
engaged in a mega Twitter was with? The mind boggles.
I'm in no real hurry to travel to China at this stage
of the game.
We're
currently researching how the 'Kill Bill' movies fit
into the Oriental connection. Quentin Tarantino at
his best or worst, depending on who you ask.
Kung
Fu, the television serious was good value. Rest in
peace David Carradine, who played peace-loving Shaolin
monk, Kwai Chang Caine,
Macau
Famous
or infamous for its casinos and resorts. Australian's
James Packer got out of his casino operations in Macau,
via some friendly encouragement from Macau government
powers that be, so there's no longer the Packer 'City
Of Dreams' to follow, and the other casino in downtown
Macau no longer has the name Crown Macau. Lawrence
Ho and friends run the casinos there not, and Mr Packer
is focussed squarely on Australia. Nor is he part
of the Hollywood clique where he was once at the head
of RatPac Entertainment and even had Sintra's old
office. Ah, times change.
Thailand
Overall
nice people, however like many countries there is
a dark side. Thailand's nightlife scene is infamous.
There's also a casino out of town which is linked
to people trafficking et al. Not good. The beaches
of Thailand are beautiful. The food is delicious (aroy
mark) is the term.

Bitcoin
and crypto culture in Sydney, Australia
I've
made friends with some very nice folks in Sydney's
bitcoin - blockchain ranks who have a strong connection
to the orient. They are positive, optimistic, respectful,
smart and friendly. So far, so good. Thumbs up to
the cryptos 'down under'.
to
be continued. Stay turned for a report on the upcoming
Feb 2018 tour of Australia by New Japan Pro Wrestling.
I also predict that WWE's Shinsuke Nakamura will win
the big one at this years WrestleMania, the promotions
premium event.
