He's the king of the publicity stunt, one of the world's most flamboyant and colourful characters, and a cashed up billionaire, and he has grand plans to boost business in a somewhat embattled Las Vegas.

The question is, will Branson's latest daring business project and extension of the world famous Virgin brand work, and get bums in seats; that's actually bodies in beds and hotel foyers in downtown Vegas.

The charismatic Branson does his homework, however history tells us that not everything 'Dr Yes' and his Virgin Group turns to gold. Branson is the first to admit this, with one of the most famous examples being his now defunct Virgin Cola.

There was no need for Virgin Group to invest in Las Vegas, however the world knows Branson loves a challenge, and he's found one in 'Sin City'.

The site of what will become Virgin Hotels has its history as Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was was home to 1,500 rooms and suites off the Las Vegas Strip. It will continue to operate under the Hard Rock banner through the conclusion f 2019, when the renovations are expected to be completed.

“Virgin is all about fun, entertainment, not taking ourselves too seriously,” Branson said. “Virgin Atlantic has had a lot of fun flying tons of people to Las Vegas from Britain for many years. Virgin America has done the same, and we wouldn’t have just come to Las Vegas unless we could’ve found the property that was very Virgin, and I think that’s what we’ve achieved.”

The only Virgin Hotel opened for business so far is in Chicago. Several others are planned for New York, Dallas, New Orleans, Nashville, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Palm Springs, California, and Edinburgh, Scotland. One may ponder the question, is this entirely for business reasons, or does Branson and his partner like to sleep around via various hotels, so he would rather pay himself that a competing hotel chain while enjoying the United States? Whatever the case, Branson has a lot of work on his hand to improve the business in Vegas, and if he does, he will be looking for the news to spread outside 'Sin City (but not the bedroom or casino tales), which as per Vegas lore are to stay in Vegas.

Should Branson's efforts to boot Las Vegas via his hotel brand be successful, perhaps this may give the mogul the confidence to start another new venture down under in Australia, one of his favorite destinations. Branson might like to help Sydney's struggling Hard Rock Cafe brand at Darling Harbour, and give some competition to the likes of QT Sydney, Hilton, Intern-Continental, Sheraton, The Darling and friends. Sydney is an extremely strong market for the mid to high end hotel market, so you may wonder why there's not a Virgin Hotel Sydney yet. Give him time.
