Delighted that Necker Island will soon be open again as we continue the recovery from Hurricane Irma. I’m looking forward to welcoming our first guests of 2018 back to Necker – the Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC).

The XTC finals were due to take place earlier this year, but the team moved the dates so they could still hold the event on Necker. The final will take place on October 19th, and I’m proud to be helping to judge the winner again.

This year’s finalists have already got through three stages to reach Necker, winning through a nerve-wracking public pitch at CES, the world’s biggest technology trade show in Las Vegas. They are: Power Ledger a blockchain-based peer-to-peer energy trading platform from Perth, Australia; Owlet Baby Care, a healthcare platform and baby monitoring system from the Utah; and Revl, a smart action, AI-powered camera system from San Francisco. All three have been selected for their innovative concepts and potential to have a positive impact – I look forward to seeing them in action.

In previous years, start-ups including Canva, Sphero, Doctor on Demand, Wanderu, Cresilon and Bloomlife have all featured in XTC. As well as the chance to pitch in the final on Necker, they get money-can’t buy access to training and support throughout the incubation process. It’s a unique chance to get unique visibility, mentorship, resources and the potential to reach scale quickly.
