Branson beams himself onto Harbour Bridge - 10th
July 2009
British Ashes fans have taken great
delight in billionaire Richard Branson's latest
stunt - a cheeky sledge against Australian cricket
captain Ricky Ponting beamed onto the Sydney Harbour
Bridge.
On the opening day of the Ashes cricket series
in the UK, Branson's image and a text message
appeared on one of the Sydney Harbour Bridge piers.
“Good
luck Ricky. You’ll need it. Dicky x”,
said the sledge, which appeared next to an image
of a grinning Branson, his face painted with the
St George’s Cross.
The
stunt was covered by British press including The
Guardian and The Daily Star.
“I
love Australia and I know that the Aussies are
always up for a spot of light-hearted banter,
especially when it comes to The Ashes,”
Branson said.
“Every
Australian I know wants to stuff us in the upcoming
series and I wanted to do my bit to encourage
the England team in the hope that they can win
the Ashes this time round.”
However
Branson posted a tongue-in-cheek apology on his
twitter account last night after media outlets
reported the stunt upset Australian fans.
“I’m
sorry if I’ve ruffled a few Aussie feathers
with my message... maybe the truth hurt! C’mon
England,” he said.
Branson
is well known for his promotional stunts, which
have included jumping off buildings and helicopters.
