Media's The Sydney Morning Herald had more than 5 million readers across print
and digital in July, and a 1 million lead over its nearest competitor after three
months of solid audience growth. However,
Australia's newspapers had a tough run in July, with 12.1 million people reading
a print title over the month compared to 12.2 million in June, with drought-stricken
rural areas seeing community and regional titles slump dramatically, Enhanced
Media Metrics Australia (Emma) data for July shows. Some
titles fared better than other, with The Sydney Morning Herald's cross-platform
readership increasing over July from 4.98 million people to 5.03 million in the
third month of solid audience growth. This has pushed the Fairfax title more than
one million readers higher than News Corp's second-placed Herald Sun, at 4.02
million (up from 4 million). The
Daily Telegraph and The Australian increased their audiences, with 3.83 million
and 3.18 million readers across all platforms respectively. The
Age readership dropped from 2.84 million to 2.81 million over the month, with
modest declines recorded by The Courier-Mail and The Australian Financial Review.
Seven West Media's West Australian has grown since April, from 1.689 million to
2.09 million in July. *click
