AJ
Styles (WWE Champion) and Carmella
(WWE Women's SmackDown champion)
by
Greg Tingle It's
WrestleMania season come early, at least if your an Australian based pro wrestling
(sports entertainment) fan. Now, it's technically not WrestleMania, but it's the
closest thing you could ever get to it down under in Australia. For
a few month's there's been rumblings down under of an upcoming super card in Melbourne,
with John Cena mentioning it in a couple of media interviews, but now its 110%
official, with an official announcement from the WWE via both Vince McMahon and
Triple H, and now AJ Styles and Carmella has set foot on Australian soil - at
the Melbourne Cricket Ground no less. It's
the Super Show-Down and the WWE promises a WrestleMania like super card of matches,
and with today's wrestling product, you know the wrestling action is going to
be off the charts. The
WWE Champion and Smackdown Womens Champion checked out some AFL jersey's
and threw around the footy field, as well as cutting some fair dinkum promos to
the media crews in attendance, which seemed to be dominated by Network Ten, interesting
enough. We suspect Fox Sports and Network Nine will be doing their own follow
up stories soon enough, as well as giving overall media support to the tour. Styles
and Carmella be flanked by another 20 or so WWE Superstars come Saturday, 6 October. You
have all of your favourite superstars, legends are going to be here, you have
Ronda Rousey, the Big Show, Shawn Michaels, Triple H versus The Undertaker for
the last time ever, Carmella said. Styles
said, Knowing that were going to fill this place out and knowing how
loud its going to be here, its pretty unbelievable. Over
70,000 people are expected to fill the iconic Melbourne Cricket Group. Sports
entertainment powerhouse and global leader, WWE, have teamed up with TEG Dainty
for the event with tickets starting off from just under $40 to $1,427 for ringside.
Fan and VIP style packages are also available. It's $3,568 for the ultimate VIP
experience including personal photo opportunities, group Q&A sessions, autographs,
food and more. For most fans, just being their is more than enough, so if you
factor in transport, which might include a flight from interstate, you are looking
at a least a few hundred dollars. Of course, if you live in Melbourne and get
a cheap seat, you can do it for less than say $70, and that might include a meat
pie and beer! At
present the WWE can confirm a world class line up including John Cena, Ronda Rousey,
Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton, Nia Jax, Shane McMahon,
AJ Styles, Charlotte Flair, Daniel Bryan, The Miz, Sasha Banks, Alexa Bliss, Big
Show, Bray Wyatt, and Aussie tag team duo Billie Kay and Peyton Royce of The IIconics.
Michael's is expected to referee or interfere in a match, but as WWE legend Bruce
Prichard (aka Brother Love) would say, that's rumor and innuendo. Hardcore wrestling
fans will know of Prichard's podcasts including Something To Wrestle With and
Something
Else To Wrestle With, the later of which is available on the WWE
Network... the other being on YouTube.
Prichard and co offer behind the scenes news in insight into the world of professional
wrestling, including stories that were never originally intended for wrestling
fans to know, but the industry has changed along from the days of "smoke
filled arenas", as WWE chairman Mr. Vince McMahon puts it.
The Undertaker will be
enjoying (we hope) his final match against Triple
H. One may argue that both are past their prime, especially Undertaker, but
that's part of what makes them legends. They still get it done in the ring with
stellar performances, and fans will be euphoric. There is only one real HHH and
one Undertaker. It's like Rocky V or Balboa in the world of professional wrestling.
WWE put on a massive stadium show in Melbourne back in 2002 entitled Global Warning,
which packed close to 60,000 in Etihad Stadium and was headlined by The Rock vs
Triple H vs Brock Lesnar. This time around, some of the names may have changed,
but make no mistake, some of the in ring matches will be superior, but just don't
tell that to some of the wrestler's who were here in 2002 or they might want to
slam or suplex you. On that point, fans know its show business but they also know
that these are world class athletes who perform amazing moves and holds, to give
fans the ultimate sports entertainment action. True fans know to be respectful
to the wrestlers, but yes, you can still boo or diss... just ask John Cena or
Roman Reigns. Sometimes the good guys get a bad guy type response. Perhaps professional
wrestling brings out the villain in all of us. Get over your work and life frustrations
and cheer and boo it out of your system at the modern day equivalent of the Roman
Coliseum. Tickets
for the Super Show-Down will be available Thursday, June 28, at 10AM via Ticketek. Websites TEG
