A
GoFundMe donation
campaign has been successful in saving WWE Hall of Famer Paul 'Mr. Wonderful'
Orndorff from homelessness. Orndorff
has been wrestling since 1976, competing for seven years in the territories, where
he won the prestigious NWA National Heavyweight Championship in 1982. Joining
the then WWF (World Wrestling Federation) in 1983, Orndorff is perhaps best known
for being in the main event of the first WrestleMania, teaming with the late,
great, 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper, to face Hulk Hogan and Mr. T. In
2005, Orndorff was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, the night before WrestleMania
21, by Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan, and was inducted into the NWA Hall of Fame four
years later. Orndorff
made an appearance at WrestleMania 30 in 2014, and on WWE RAW in August that year
to celebrate the birthday of long time rival and occasional tag team partner,
Hogan.
Orndorff has been in serious financial difficulties, a plight facing many former
athletes and this is not uncommon for retired professional wrestlers, no matter
whether they were successful at the highest level or not. Orndorff had owed close
$10,000 in property tax, with an October 1 deadline being set. In
a turn of good fortune the campaign exceeded it's target on September 16 and has
reached $10,203 according to a number of professional wrestling news websites. In
a post from his son Travis Orndorff, he said had been overwhelmed by the support
and love that fans of his father had shown. "To
say that I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and kind words, is an understatement.
More than any penny donated, the comments that you have posted have brought shear
joy to my father. I will post a video of my father soon. Heading to see him tomorrow.
What's next? Fans
can continue to show their support for Paul, as the campaign is still receiving
donations. You
can donate to help Orndorff even more here. Other
processional wrestlers and athletes can take a good lesson from this - plan for
the future as you may not be a world beater forever and injures and such can catch
up with you, which in turn can limit your income capacity. The
Media Man agency is delighted to have helped spread the world across media / social
media, and is thrilled that this story for a wrestling greats' challenges outside
the ring has enjoyed some positive developments. Long time wrestling fans may
not be calling son Travis the 'New Mr. Wonderful' with lots of cred behind it.
We wish the Orndorff family well with everything. Websites GoFundMe Paul
