The X Factor (Australia)

The X Factor was a Network Ten television show which was based on the UK television show The X Factor, broadcast on ITV. It was a music talent elimination show split over three categories: group, solo 16-25 and solo 25 and over. It was hosted by Daniel MacPherson and the judges were Australian Idol judge and music producer Mark Holden, singer Kate Ceberano and Scottish events manager John Reid. The show drew obvious comparisons to Australian Idol, and included one of its judges.

The winner of the 2005 series, the only one broadcast, was Random. The series rated poorly and was not to return again.

There have been recent reports that The X Factor may soon be returning to Australian television, and that discussions with the Seven and Nine Networks, who had long been the victims of Australian Idol's success on rival Network Ten, had commenced.

2011 Series

The X Factor Australia is returning soon to Australian television as there is a sighted death in rival television programme Australian Idol. The Seven Network and Nine Network are in the process of bidding for the rights to the programme which is set to return in February 2011. Once the network has been announced the decision for the host of The X Factor, The Xtra Factor and the four judges will be made. The Xtra Factor will only air if The Seven Network win the rights to the programme because of similar setup to the UK's version of the show, where The X Factor airs on ITV1 and then The Xtra Factor airs straight after on ITV2, which can be done on Seven because of 7One and 7Two.

It was rumoured Australian Singer Peter Andre would join the panel for the second season but has since denied this in his UK Magazine in which he write for. British X Factor Judge Dannii Minogue has also been mentioned and said she would love to judge the show.

The X Factor (UK)

The X Factor is a British television singing competition contested by aspiring singers drawn from public auditions. It is the originator of the international X Factor franchise. The six series of the show to date have aired from August/September through to December. The show is produced by FremantleMedia's talkbackTHAMES and Simon Cowell's production company SYCOtv and is currently sponsored by TalkTalk in the UK and Domino's Pizza in Ireland. The "X Factor" of the title refers to the undefinable "something" that makes for star quality. The show is broadcast on the ITV network in the United Kingdom and on TV3 in Ireland, with spin-off behind-the-scenes shows The Xtra Factor and The X Factor 24/7 screened on ITV2 and TV3. The X Factor was devised as a replacement for the highly successful Pop Idol, which was put on indefinite hiatus after its second series, largely because Simon Cowell wished to launch a show that he owned the television rights to. The perceived similarity between the shows later became the subject of a legal dispute.

In the initial televised audition phase of the show, contestants sing in front of the judges – currently Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole – and, from series 6, a live audience, in the hope of getting through to the "boot camp" round. After a further selection process, the judges are each given a category to mentor and the chosen finalists then progress to the final phase of the competition, during which the public vote for their favourite act following weekly live performances by the contestants. The winning contestant's single is released in time for the end of year chart battle for the UK's Christmas number one, a spot which it has gained in four successive years from 2005 to 2008. As of May 2010, a total of 15 number-one singles have been released by artists who have appeared on the show. The all-new X Factor champion receives a recording contract with record label Syco Music Ltd. with a stated value of £1,000,000. This includes a cash payment to the winner, but the majority is allocated to marketing and recording costs. The show is the biggest television talent competition in Europe and has proved hugely popular with the public. Series 6 attracted 200,000 auditionees and peaked at 19.7 million UK viewers (a 63.2% audience share). 10 million votes were cast in the series 6 final.

The X Factor format has been adopted in a number of other countries. Versions of the format have become successful throughout the world, most notably in Denmark and the Netherlands, where two series have been shown and a third is expected, as well as in Italy, Spain, Colombia, Portugal and India. However, the original British version has not been broadcast in any other country (except Ireland) due to unresolved rights issues.
