Personal
trainer Anthony Marich insists he won the inaugural
Mr Bondi competition last Saturday despite his quintessentially
Bondi appearance and not because of it.
“They
weren’t looking for someone like me, I honestly
believe that,” Mr Marich said. “I’m
a personal trainer, I’ve got a little bit of
muscle and long blonde hair and I think it really
worked against me because I was too much of a cliche.”
The
final round of the competition, which organisers said
was “not just about the sixpack” and searched
for “deeper qualities”, was held at Bondi
FM Cafe Bar with the final 12 contestants subjected
to a speed-dating-style interview session.
“I
guess they were looking for genuineness, truthfulness,
honesty - all the stuff that’s getting lost,”
he said.
Defeating
runner-up Mike Goldman for the title and bragging
rights, Mr Marich also walked away with $8000 in prizes,
$3000 of which he said would help turn his garage
into a personal training gym.

Are
you Mr. Bondi? We know you're out there and we would
like to unearth you.
Mr.
Bondi 2011 is destined to be found this summer; whether
he is sleeping off a hangover on the beach, riding
a wave in the surf, doing the walk of shame on a Tuesday
morning, wearing a pink shirt with pride, driving
the 389 bus or an Wactor (waiter/actor) nearly drowning
to get a gig on Bondi Rescue.
The
first heat takes place at Bondi Social on Saturday
afternoon the 8th January over a Vodka O cocktail
and a sausage sizzle. The top 12 finalists will be
chosen and announced on facebook and Bondi FM on 9th
January. The final will be held at Bondi FM on Saturday
night, the 15th January where all potential Mr. Bondis
will be interviewed live-to-air. The winner will be
announced that evening.

Contestants
in the Mr Bondi pageant heat last Saturday rose to
a variety of challenges, including building Lego models,
spitting dummies and ripping up copies of the Wentworth
Courier.
Organiser
Sarah Mulvin said the heats were hilarious and the
contenders were “full of sport”.
From
35 entrants, 12 finalists were chosen and will now
compete for the Mr Bondi tiara and sash this Saturday.
“It’s
about inner beauty - they don’t need to have
a wax, a spray tan or a bikini,” Ms Mulvin said.
“The
local community has been very supportive. Many were
saying it’s about time there was something like
this.”
Finalists
will be interviewed on Bondi FM and judged in a speed
dating round.
“We’ll
be asking them to talk about their feelings - whether
they like long walks along the beach and whether they
have a six pack - of beer,” Ms Mulvin said.
Tickets
for the finals include a vodka cocktail and live entertainment
from 5-9pm on Saturday at Bondi FM, 2/143 Curlewis
