Game

Resident Evil, known in Japan as Biohazard is a survival horror video game by Capcom. The inaugural title and first installment in the Resident Evil series, it was originally released in 1996 for the PlayStation and has subsequently been ported to the Sega Saturn and IBM compatible PC.

In 2002, a remake of the game was released for the Nintendo GameCube featuring new graphics, voice acting and many significant gameplay changes. A Nintendo DS port of the original was released in early 2006 as Resident Evil: Deadly Silence.

It was one of the first games to be dubbed a "survival horror", borrowing from the "ambient survival horror" genre coined by Alone in the Dark. Accordingly, Game Informer refers to "the original Resident Evil" as "one of the most important games of all time".[2] The inspiration for Resident Evil was the earlier Capcom game Sweet Home. Shinji Mikami was initially commissioned to make a horror game set in a haunted mansion like Sweet Home. (Credit: Wikipedia).

Films

There are currently three Resident Evil films, written by Paul W. S. Anderson . Though acclaimed horror film director George A. Romero was hired to write a script for the first film, it was ultimately rejected in favor of one penned by Anderson. As Romero's script was a close, but not full, adaptation of the game, Capcom believed fans would feel that the film had been altered too much from the game, and that newcomers would dislike the premise. Sony released a revised synopsis that referred to Extinction as "the third and final installment" of the Resident Evil film series. The films were mostly panned by critics, but reaction from fans was mixed. Some praised the film for bringing the series to a mainstream audience. A fourth film, Resident Evil: Afterlife, is currently being drafted.

The films have been financially successful enough to encourage the approval of a trilogy. Released films are as follows:

Resident Evil (2002)
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)
Capcom has also created two Biohazard films:
Biohazard 4D Executer (2000)
Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)
