On View: Sturtevant: Double Trouble at Museum of Modern Art

Artist Elaine Sturtevant only borrowed from the best. Officially known as “Sturtevant,” she started making her own versions of iconic works from well-known artists of her generation in 1964 and successfully reinterpreted the art of her time for 50 years. Sturtevant: Double Trouble, at the Museum of Modern Art, is the first comprehensive survey of her work in the U.S. and presents over 50 objects in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, photography sculpture and film.

She honed her chameleon-like technique with works by Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, and moved through other celebrated, mostly male, Pop and modern artists to eventually become a pivotal figure in the history of post-modern art. Her work is not a succession of copies or imitations, but an exploration of the seminal trends that have dominated modern art since the 1960s. Organized as an historical overview rather than a retrospective, Double Trouble presents her work from a contemporary viewpoint interspersing recent video works with key pieces which best highlight her long career.

Sturtevant: Double Trouble is on view at the Museum of Modern Art through February 22, 2015.
