Chris Jericho. The Master of reinvention in the pro wrestling business. Wrestling and media mastermind

by Greg Tingle

Chris Jericho is amped to be part of a pro wrestling promotional war again.

Now a household name, Jericho rose to prominence as part of the pro wrestling Monday Night Wars of the 90s.

He has likened himself to the "David Bowie of the wrestling world", having been able to reinvent himself many times and evolved to stay relevant.

AEW's biggest star is excited to see sports entertainment is a real life wrestling war once again. Just make sure you say 'Thank you" to him, and that includes AEW management and Turner.

In a new interview with TV Insider, Jericho was asked about AEW’s impact on the pro wrestling business and if WWE is watching what the upstart promotion is doing.

“I’m not surprised. I will say this…everyone in WWE owes Chris Jericho a thank you because the moment I signed with AEW, it became legit. That’s when everyone started getting these huge raises to not go. It was very similar to what happened to Bobby Hull in the early 1970s when he signed with the WHA (World Hockey Association) for a million dollars. Every other player got a huge raise to not jump with him. My dad [Ted Irvine] went from a $35,000 to a $100,000 a year because they didn’t want him going to the WHA. It’s the same thing for Vince [McMahon] is doing with WWE.”

You have to love Jericho's way with words and the way he's able to blur the lines (which has become a popular # on Twitter in reference to the world of pro wrestling), with media agency Media Man Int - Media Man Australia often using the now popular phrase. #thankyoujericho is also building up steam on social media as late, and why not.

Jericho laid it out for fans and for those in the business:

“This is a war. Even if you don’t want it to be, it just is. There hasn’t been any competition for WWE on a national basis for 20 years or more. I think this is something they didn’t really want, but it’s great for the fans and great for the guys. I think in the long run it’s going to make a difference because it gives people a choice. And it’s always good to have a choice.”

Like in any industry, competition is usually good for the workers and the end product.

With a major cable television deal in place with Turner (TNT Drama), AEW is off to a stellar start. Even their press release caused bit of a stir in the wrestling media and pop culture media worlds, with The Wrap and others looking to get scoops, and some outlets getting their presser before others. The Media Man agency joined in the Twitter banter which got noticed by the powers that be at The Wrap, AEW and elsewhere.

AEW is not expecting to win a wrestling "war" overnight. It's a slow build. Being a follower of the business and Jericho for a couple of decades, the AEW team is playing to win. Rival WWE has already locked down a number of their wrestlers (sports entertainers), preventing them from making a clean jump to another promotion such as All Elite Wrestling. No names required... the Smarts will know who we are referring to. It's going to be interesting to check in on AEW's progress over the coming weeks, months and years. The world keeps changing, and this is of course pertains to the business of sports entertainment - professional wrestling. By all accounts, Jericho and a number of his bosses including Cody Rhodes and Tony Khan have their finger on the pulse. WWE kingpin also states his finger is on the pulse. In my opinion, if anyone has pulled the trigger, its Jericho, and 'Good Ol' Jim Ross is providing a bit of banter on the building war as the weeks go by on podcasts such as Busted Open Radio, The Hall Of Fame with Booker T and Brad Gilmore XPAC 12360 and his own Grilling Jr. The AEW - WWE war is the hottest wrestling story in the world, on an ongoing basis, tied into the upcoming 'Double Or Nothing' and Starrcast event in Las Vegas.

Wrestling insiders say that the fans win in the AEW vs WWE war. Wrestlers can also expect to be able to negotiate bigger pay cheques and possibly enhanced working conditions. Not all on the Brock Lesnar scale, but certainly larger pay and the ability to work fewer dates. There is competition to sign the best talent available, both in-ring, and behind the scenes workers such as production, trainers and such. And yes, there's even a friendly battle for news media headlines, and we're delighted to be covering both promotions in a fair and balanced capacity. Yes, we're very happy WWE Network subscribers and have been following the WWE for four decades. That doesn't mean we can't be fans of AEW also. In fact, the out of the ring action and storylines are sometimes more interesting than the matches playing out in the squared circle. Maybe AEW plans to change that.

The wrestling war may not yet be bowling shoe ugly (channeling Jim Ross - now an AEW guy), or it may all just be friendly fire... until someone goes down for the count for good. Last man standing?

Jericho is excited and pumped up, and you should be too. Everyone is pretty happy, unless your the beancounter at WWE who is having to put more 00000's on the end of sports entertainers monthly cheques. Aw well, WWE is also about "giving back", be it WWE Community, B A Star, Connor's Cure or other (WWE Community website), so many wrestlers are getting an even bigger smile on their face, while they put smiles on the fans faces the world over. Winners are grinners. Don't bet against Jericho - but you knew that already.
