Catwoman is a fictional character associated with DC Comics' Batman franchise. Historically a supervillainess, the character was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, partially inspired by Kane's cousin, Ruth Steel, as well as actress Jean Harlow. The original and most widely known Catwoman, Selina Kyle, first appears in Batman #1 (Spring 1940) in which she is known as The Cat. She is usually depicted as an adversary of Batman, known for having a complex love-hate relationship with him. In her first appearance, she was a whip-carrying burglar with a taste for high-stake thefts. For many years Catwoman thrived, but from September 1954 to November 1966 she took an extended hiatus due to the newly developing Comics Code Authority in 1954. These issues involved the rules regarding the development and portrayal of female characters that were in violation of the Comics Code. Since the 1990s, Catwoman has been featured in an eponymous series that cast her as an antiheroine classy cat burglar rather than a traditional villain. The character has been one of Batman's most enduring love interests.

A popular figure, Catwoman has been featured in most media adaptations related to Batman. Actresses Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether and Eartha Kitt introduced her to a large audience on the 1960s Batman television series and the 1966 Batman motion picture. Michelle Pfeiffer portrayed the character in 1992's Batman Returns. Halle Berry starred in a stand-alone Catwoman film, 2004's Catwoman, which was a box-office flop, and bears little to no resemblance to the Batman character. Anne Hathaway portrayed Selina Kyle in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises.

Catwoman was ranked 11th on IGN's "Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time" list, and 51st on Wizard magazine's "100 Greatest Villains of All Time" list. Conversely, she was ranked 20th on IGN's "Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time" list, as well as 23rd in Comics Buyer's Guide's "100 Sexiest Women in Comics" list.

Catwoman movie - story:

Shy, sensitive artist Patience Philips (HALLE BERRY) can’t seem to stop apologizing for her own existence. A meek people-pleaser, she works as a graphic designer for mammoth cosmetics company Hedare Beauty, run by the despotic George Hedare (LAMBERT WILSON) and his supermodel wife, Laurel (SHARON STONE). When Patience inadvertently stumbles upon a sinister secret about the company’s soon-to-be-released revolutionary anti-aging product, she finds herself trapped in the middle of a dangerous conspiracy. But at her darkest moment, Patience is saved – reborn with the strength, speed, agility and ultra-keen senses of a cat.

Guided by a mysterious mentor named Ophelia Powers (FRANCES CONROY), Patience soon begins to explore her newfound prowess and feline intuition, as well as her history – she is the latest in a long line of women who have been chosen throughout the ages to be gifted with these extraordinary powers. With her newly-gained knowledge and strength she becomes Catwoman, a strong, sleek and stealthy creature delicately balancing on the thin line between good and bad.

Catwoman’s adventures begin as she goes on the prowl to settle a few scores, but her double life is quickly complicated by Patience’s burgeoning relationship with stalwart detective Tom Lone (BENJAMIN BRATT). Lone is falling for Patience, but he cannot shake his fascination with the feline fatale who appears to be responsible for a string of crimes plaguing the city.

As she learns how to exploit her superhuman powers, Catwoman becomes stronger, faster and a greater threat to her enemies – and the line between Patience and her undomesticated alter ego begins to blur.

Catwoman movie:

Catwoman is a 2004 American action film and quasi-spin-off of the Batman film series directed by Pitof Comar and starring Halle Berry, Sharon Stone, Benjamin Bratt, Lambert Wilson, Frances Conroy and Alex Borstein. The film was loosely inspired by the DC Comics character of the same name, who is traditionally an anti-hero and love interest of the superhero Batman.[2] This story features a completely new character, Patience Phillips, taking the Catwoman name, and viewing the traditional Catwoman as a historical figure. The film was produced by Village Roadshow Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. It was poorly received by critics and audiences and is commonly listed as one of the worst films ever made.
