Pokie Palaces Warned Over ATM Credit Cards, by Greg
Tingle - 7th November 2010
Pubs
and pubs with pokie machines aka poker machines or
"one armed bandits", are being strongly
encouraged to ensure their ATM's (automatic teller
machines) do not allow patrons to withdraw cash from
credit cards.
Yes,
its a battle of the Australian political machine VS
the poker machines! Who have you placed money on?
A
New South Wales government investigation has found
8 ATM's in 6 venues across New South Wales are still
providing the option, despite a ban introduced last
year. That's about a 100% strike rate (not in the
government's favor).
Venues
face fines of over $1,000 bucks if they breach the
rule, but obviously the fine has not outlawed the
practice - its still happening.
The
Gaming and Racing Minister Kevin Greene says licensed
venues are responsible for ensuring compliance with
all gaming harm minimisation requirements.
"Credit
card cash withdrawals were banned from ATMs in pubs
and clubs in January 2009 by the NSW Government,"
he told the press.
"The
intent of these laws is to stop problem gamblers gambling
on credit." Duh!
Overall
compliance standards have been extremely high, with
just 6 out of more than 3,000 pubs and clubs found
in breach, but do you trust the numbers?
Many
media and gaming industry insiders were skeptical
of numbers released by the Australian Productivity
Commission report on Australian gaming and gambling.
Greene
says inspectors from the Office of Liquor, Gaming
and Racing regularly conduct audits of licensed venues
and in response to complaints.
Leaks
says more and more punters are playing online and
the lure of almost exact copy machines games like
the popular Cleopatra, manufactured by IGT, are a
big part of the reason why. Online casinos are also
offering what are understood to be extremely attractive
sign up bonuses to new players, where as pubs do not
offer sign up bonuses, rather just cheap food and
drinks. There is also debate whether pub pokie patrons
should be allowed to drink beer while they are playing
the machines, since drink affects the brain. If playing
at home such a rule would be basically impossible
to police.
Media
Man encourages everyone to gamble responsibly and
to play by the rules.

er, punters, how do you feel about the crackdown on
credit card withdrawals at the pokies palaces? Tell

Aussie
Pokie Palace Bandits Strike; Crime Spree Continues,
by Greg Tingle - 2nd June 2010
Casino
players, would be crooks, gaming entrepreneurs, loyal
readership the world over... seems Australia is breeding
a few Bonnie and Clyde - Ned Kelly hybrid bandits,
and your local pokie palace is the next target. Following
the Gambling911 report of Aussie Bonnie and Clyde
knock offs a few months ago, another couple of punters
are having a go. Crime does not pay, well, not for
long. We take our trusty baton and plastic handcuffs
to probe down under...
An
Aussie gang of bandits raided a Melbourne, Australia,
pokies club last night.
Patrons,
punters, staff, all and sundry, were forced to get
to the floor.
The
trio set upon the club in Sunset Boulevard, Jacana,
just after 10pm armed with a firearm and a machete.
Terrified
patrons and staff enclosed in the punting section
were ordered to lay on the floor.
The
bandits nabbed a significant sum of cash, as you might
suspect, and ran off with their ill gotten gains into
the dark of night.
Police
said in a statement that no gun shots were fired and
there were no reports of any injuries during the hold-up.
Sniffer
dogs and the Police Airwing failed to locate the robbers.
Armed
Crime Taskforce Detectives are investigating.
The
attack follows a string of hold ups and crimes at
Australian pubs and hotels.
Media
Man has observed a trend of suburban and regional
pubs, watering holes, pokies hang outs and the like
being the preferred choice of criminals, over traditional
land based casinos in Australia, which have beefed
up security considerably over the past 12 months.

Online
poker and online casino games continue to grow in
popularity in Australia, despite economic recession.
The Australian government is considering how to best
implement some recommendations in the Productivity
Report. Media Man has documented some of their viewpoints
for government law maker consideration, as well as
offered Fairfax - Sun Herald - The Sydney Morning
Herald (Fairfax Media) an exclusive interview. Gambling911
will also be privy to some exclusive information regarding
the gaming sector in the Australian - Asia Pacific
region in coming weeks.

Internet Betting Laws
It
may seem difficult but it is important that all
citizens across the world stay updated with Internet
Betting laws. Below you will find what we understand
as the laws to online betting in certain areas
of the world.
US
Internet Betting Laws
The United States of America has the most ambiguous
online casino laws in the world. They have passed
laws to ban banks from allowing transactions that
are deemed illegal, but no one has any idea what
the United States considers legal or illegal.
Currently, all US citizens are advised to check
with local laws before gambling online. Even the
online casinos aren't sure if you should be allowed
to bet at their site. Some companies don't allow
US players, others allow some US players, and
some could care less where a player is from.
UK
Internet Casino Laws
The UK is the first major country to completely
legalize and regulate online gambling. The Gambling
Act of 2005 was passed while Prime Minister Tony
Blair was in office. Blair had a flair for expanding
gambling, but when Gordon Brown took over as Prime
Minister in the UK he provided a tax structure
that was so high that most online casino companies
were not urged to relocate to England. Today,
all web branded casinos that are in a UK approved
jurisdiction are legal for UK citizens to play
at.
International
Online Betting Laws
As the world gets deeper into the 21st century
and the Internet becomes a more common cultural
tool more and more countries are realizing the
reality that is Internet gambling. Currently,
Spain, Italy, Germany and other countries have
moved to legalize and regulate the industry, while
few still look to protect their homeland gaming
monopolies. It is extremely important to check
all local, state, and federal laws before participating
in any online gambling activities.
