Sydney
Morning Herald showcases TV News and Current Affairs; Yarns from a media and sports
agent - October - December 2018

The
Sydney Morning Herald - TV News and Current Affairs Gonzo
journalism, spin - PR or both Satire
and News. A Media Man exclusive... News?
Yes please - Would you like advertising with that? Yes thanks, just a few text
links and a banner, no need for a television or multi-platform campaign What
FAANGS are on offer today? Oh, a Facebook and Instagram outage... the founders
left. Satire - we have a STAN deal today, it's our friendly FAANG. Fairfax is
in bed with STAN, not NETFLIX, but we will get one of our hacks to put in a few
nice lines about the October NETFLIX Australia offerings... Geez, thanks. Is GLOW
(Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling) back on this month? No, sorry, but we have IRON
FIST and DAREDEVIL. What's about the other Marvel themed shows? Sorry sir, they
have a new home at Movies Anywhere, but I'm not allowed to give you the website,
but you can Google it! Calling
all Australian cartoonists and illustrators... we've got more news fodder for
you. Hello, David Rowe, John Shakespeare, Eric Lobbecke, Cathy Wilcox, Mark Knight
(tennis anyone?)...

websites are evolving with the changing times, and that's a good thing. While
it's easy to get pissed off at many changes in and around the news media industry
in Australia and beyond, it's also refreshing to be able to find positive changes
when you look deep enough. Now,
we already know that media is one of the toughest and most competitive industries
in the world - I've been in the game since 2001, and actually back to 1995, if
I include the 5 years at the late, great, Optus Vision, where we knocked doors,
managed accounts from Optus HQ at Chatswood, retained and bundled, upsold PPV's
and ethnic channels and all the rest. Those we the days. My first close up look
at the "rivers of gold", which in many ways peaked for me circa 2008. Let's
not even dig into the often bias ABC. Hopefully they can get back on track with
the new boss. The word in the biz is that the predecessor wasn't very good, nor
well liked or respected. Aw well, you can't please everyone. A
term called "usability" is talked alot in reference to websites, and
I do like how the SMH (and The Age) have categories and sub categories. The TV
News and Current Affairs section is a great example of this. Sure,
it might look a bit tabloid, and that's what some of the content is, but its pretty
easy to find. Just
maybe the SMH could go for a new slogan. Now, it certainly doesn't need to be
'IF IT BLEEDS, ITS LEADS, but perhaps something in the same vein at New York Post's
'A GOOD HEADLINE KICKS YOU IN THE EYE BALLS'. I would have preferred, 'NEWS THAT
KICKS YOU IN THE EYEBALLS', but I'll digress. BTW, see newshound movie flick NIGHTSTALKER,
if you haven't already, but I much prefer THE POST and CITIZEN KANE. And, how
can we forget THE RUM DIARIES and FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS. Kudos
for Fairfax Media for still being in business, and they do offer some extremely
credible news journalism - even if they don't have anywhere near as many foot
soldiers and hard nosed journalists as they did in say circa 1990. The Sydney
and Melbourne pubs don't quite have as many journo patrons as they used to a decade
or so back, so that can be construed as a positive... but not for the pubs bottom
line. An before you ask, no, I do not drink, but I am well aware of the reputation
that the media biz has for those who indulge in beer and ... um, other. It's pretty
back and WHITE when in comes to the availability of drugs in and around the biz.
For me, a cappuccino will be just fine thanks, and perhaps a beer if its a BBQ
or grand final game. Last time I indulged in beers I got escorted from a North
Bondi establishment by Sunny, under direction of John Singleton, as its was very
well warranted. I got shite faced to say the least. The SMH didn't report that
story, but you couldn't miss the BONDI BLONDE bits featuring the likes of Paris,
Jamie, Koby, the Icebergs and you know the rest. For
readers who didn't know, about a decade ago I worked for The Sydney Morning Herald
for a couple of months. It was in advertising, and I blitzed it in real estate
and auto classify sales. So much so that it pissed off much of the sales team,
as I showed up a few bludgers and under performers, and eventually management
gave me a DCD - Don't Come Monday. "You don't fit the culture" I was
told! So, was the culture back then one over under performance for sales / advertising?
Back then the newspaper was almost the size of a phonebook. Now, its more like
a restaurant menu, so draw your own conclusions. Being loud an a go getter is
not always a positive, but its usually is. A loud sales team is a healthy sales
team. Morgues are quite and so are low moral offices. Get it. This
little write up is a work in progress. I figured that if I write enough articles
one day I can put them all together and call it a book! It may be another 5 to
15 years till I actually release my own book, so enjoy these small samples in
the meantime. Read all about it, Real all about it! Seriously,
well done to the folks at Fairfax Media. I Love the SMH. Domain's doing quite
nicely also, and is a rock of a foundation to keep the ship afloat. News Limited,
we love you guys too... just check our articles and features on you guys if you
were not too sure. We are waiting for News Local to blow the lid on a government
scandal, with a strong element containing at least one office in Sydney's Eastern
Beaches region, but I can be a patient man when required. Read
something you didn't like? Sue me, or tell the dog! Time for a swim and surf -
that will help keep the stress levels of the news and adverting biz at bay. Oh,
special thanks to Mother Nature today for the rain. The rain has apparently effected
my internet connection today, so it got me away from web browsing and social media,
and back to some actual writing. Talk about a blessing in disguise. And, always
remember that the PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD. Most fear not, we love media
and sports agent / advertising projects, but there is one particular government
related department that we've been doing some journalism and investigation on.
It's a ticking time bomb type story. When we are ready, it will blow up and get
national / international headlines. Goes all the way up to a former Australian
Prime Mister, and no, its not Malcolm Turnbull, who we like and respect, even
though the Libs have lost their way in many regards. Ok, off the politics, and
back to current affairs, TV, tabloids and all the stuff that actually sells papers. Have
a great week and be kind to one another.
A
former Sydney Morning Herald campaign. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?
Sure hope so. Time for a bigger and brighter blowtorch.
