WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman Has 'No Concern' About Newly Formed TKO Boxing League
(The Ring)

March 10, 2025

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman Has 'No Concern' About Newly-Formed TKO Boxing League
President of the WBC Mauricio Sulaiman is firm in his stance that HE Turki Alalshikh and Dana White's newly-formed TKO boxing promotion isn't of any concern to him.

Last week, HE Turki Alalshikh and TKO Group Holdings, Inc announced that they, along with entertainment conglomerate Sela, entered into a multi-year partnership that would establish a brand-new boxing league. TKO is the current parent company of the WWE and UFC.

Talent development, athlete combines and academies, access to the UFC Performance Institute for boxers and TKO's production and promotional expertise are just a handful of crucial features which will be poured into the project.

But there was also talk that boxing's four sanctioning bodies, the WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF, along with some of boxing's leading promoters, would be frozen out of the sport in due time.

Sulaiman, however, isn't looking at the new promotion as a negative thing. He sees it as a 'good opportunity' for the sport, and also denied claims that his organization orchestrated a campaign where numerous boxers were posting support for the WBC in the wake of the TKO announcement.

He told ESPN: "I have absolutely no concern or no negative views whatsoever [toward TKO boxing].

"I think anything that comes into boxing is sensational...I know a lot of people started speculating and finding conspiracy theories or whatever, but absolutely not.

"I think the WBC should make its position public, which is [TKO boxing] is a good opportunity because we have always supported any movement, any company, any tournaments that have been put together.

"I truly believe that with the multibillion joint venture that is supposed to be TKO and UFC and WWE and what His Excellency has done in just under two years, it should be a great thing for the sport."

Dana White, president of the UFC, made clear after the announcement of the new league that under their new rules, there would be one champion per weight class, rather than the current four per division.

He said: "There's going to be one belt...it'll be like the UFC. The model is the model that we have [in UFC].

"The WBC, IBF, WBA etc...they will deal with those traditional promoters that are out there that exist right now. We're not going to do that. We're going to have the basic weight classes that started everything. We will have one champion.

"And you know how you're going to know who the champion is because they're going to fight their way up through the gauntlet. And once you get into the top five, you know who the five baddest dudes in the heavyweight division are. And then you'll find out who the champion is. They will defend their titles and that's how it'll work."

White will be part of a two-man team, along with WWE president Nick Khan, to lead from an executive standpoint.

"I'm sure the WBC and the WBA and all those guys, they'll still exist. They just won't work with us," added White.

Alalshikh, head of Riyadh Season, revealed that women's boxing would be an integral part of TKO's new league, and that the WBC Boxing Grand Prix, which Sulaiman will help spearhead, will play a vital role in unearthing new talent.

He said: "The market is ready, but we need to have the right people. [White] is the only guy who can deliver this vision. He's a bulldozer."

UFC open to ending the PPV model? Mark Shapiro hints at potential changes in UFC’s pay-per-view structure, emphasizing flexibility across platforms.??

March 4, 2024

"Yeah, it's interesting. I mean, certainly, life has changed on the PPV front. In the old days, the cable consortium and DirecTV were major platforms for PPV. Look, it works for us, but we are super flexible—linear broadcast, streaming, pay-per-view, or not PPV.

Remember, we own Fight Pass, which is our proprietary platform. It’s designed for the hardcore combat sports fan, featuring a lot of MMA, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and karate. It’s a strong platform on its own, and we charge a monthly and annual fee. We like having it to ourselves; we like the proprietary nature of it. But, like you saw with the WWE Network years ago with Vince McMahon, if it makes sense to fold it into a larger deal, we're open to that too.

So, it’s still early stages. We want to be a good partner, we want to listen to everyone, we want to be prudent, we want to be patient—but we definitely want to explore all options so that we can bring our audience, our athletes, our fans, and our shareholders a maximized deal."

Dana White on TKO’s new boxing venture: ‘We’re going to travel around’
Group could package UFC, boxing media rights
(Sports Business Journal)

March 7, 2025

The forthcoming TKO boxing league plans to hold events across the U.S., not just a handful of high-profile markets, and will also host fight cards outside of the country, UFC President and CEO Dana White revealed to SBJ this week.

In conjunction with Saudi powerbroker Turki Alalshikh and the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s Sela subsidiary, TKO Group Holdings officially announced on Wednesday that it will enter boxing through a new league (it hasn’t named it yet). Events won’t start until 2026, although there have been questions about whether it could begin as early as late this year. TKO is sifting through a pool of around 150 boxers to figure out who it wants to sign, and White said the intention is to build the league from the ground up -- suggesting that at least initially, the league will be more aimed at rising fighters than established superstars. TKO, the holding company of UFC, WWE and PBR, said it would reveal more details later, including the location of the first event.

In an interview in N.Y. on Wednesday, White told SBJ: “If you’ve looked at what we’ve done over the last 25 years with the UFC, we’re going to go to Mexico [with TKO Boxing], we’re going to go all over the United States. We’re not just going to put on fights in Vegas, Atlantic City and L.A. We’re going to travel around.”

After the pandemic struck in 2020, UFC started to host fight cards at its Apex facility in Las Vegas and has continued doing so. However, TKO said during its earnings report last week that it has lessened the number of cards being held there of late and is instead getting back more on the road, including many markets that haven’t had an event in years. For example, UFC recently was in Seattle and is going to K.C. in April and Des Moines in May.

White will lead day-to-day operations of the boxing property alongside WWE President Nick Khan, who introduced White and Alalshikh a year and a half ago. Khan is heading to Las Vegas next week to continue working on the roster and start to figure out a potential media rights partner. When asked if UFC and boxing rights could be packaged, White said TKO could structure the media rights deal in many different ways. White: “Depending on where we end up, we will cut a deal with one of these networks and they will let us know what they need and want, and then we can figure out how many fights we’re going to do a year, how many fights we need.”

DWCS

Dana White's Contender Series (DWCS) is a mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion spearheaded by UFC President Dana White. Here's an overview based on the information available up to October 8, 2024:

Purpose and Structure: DWCS serves as a platform for up-and-coming MMA fighters to showcase their skills with the ultimate goal of earning a contract with the UFC. Unlike regular UFC events, fighters on DWCS do not have existing UFC contracts, emphasizing the series as a true proving ground.

Historical Context: The series began in 2017, initially named Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series, and has since become a regular feature for scouting new UFC talent. It moved from UFC Fight Pass to ESPN+, broadening its accessibility and visibility.

Event Details: DWCS events are typically held weekly, providing a consistent opportunity for fighters. As of 2024, Season 8 was ongoing, with events scheduled at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The season started on August 13, 2024, and was set to conclude on October 15, 2024.

Notable Achievements: The series has been instrumental in launching the careers of several UFC fighters, including champions and top contenders. This includes names like Sean O'Malley, who has become a prominent figure in the UFC.

Viewing Options: Fans can watch DWCS live or on-demand through ESPN+, which requires a subscription. This platform has become crucial for sports streaming, offering fans an affordable way to watch live events.

Cultural Impact and Perception: DWCS not only acts as a talent scout but also as a narrative-driven series, where fighters' stories, victories, and defeats contribute to the drama of the sport. It's often discussed how fighters come from various backgrounds, some from completely obscurity, showcasing the global reach and grassroots nature of MMA.

Recent Discussion: On platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter), there's ongoing chatter about DWCS, from announcements about upcoming fights to reactions about new talents emerging from the series. This reflects the series' significant in the MMA community for discovering raw talent.

Strategic Importance for UFC: DWCS plays a strategic role in talent acquisition, reducing the need for UFC to heavily negotiate with other promotions for fighters. It's a cost-effective way to scout and contract new talent, maintaining the UFC's position as a leading force in MMA.

In summary, DWCS is not just an event but a cornerstone in the development pathway for MMA fighters aiming for UFC stardom, blending the elements of sports scouting, reality TV, and high-level athletic competition. (Grok)

DWCS9 News/Profile via Grok

DWCS9 primarily refers to Dana White's Contender Series Week 9, which is part of the UFC's talent identification and contract-earning event series. Here's what you need to know based on the information available up to October 8, 2024:

Event Details: DWCS Week 9 features fighters competing for the opportunity to earn UFC contracts. The event involves weigh-ins, live fights, and typically takes place on a Tuesday, with action beginning at 8pm ET / 5pm PT.

Significance: The Contender Series is known for showcasing up-and-coming talent in MMA. Fighters who perform well, often by winning impressively or finishing their fights, can secure a contract with the UFC, providing them with a significant platform in the world of mixed martial arts.

Recent Activity: As of late 2024, there was mention of DWCS Week 9 where all fighters successfully made weight, indicating the event's readiness to proceed as scheduled. This event, like others in the series, would be available for viewing through specific channels, likely ESPN+ for live coverage.

Public Sentiment: From posts on X, there's interest and excitement around the outcomes of these events, with some users providing breakdowns or predictions, indicating a community of followers closely watching these developments for new talents or surprising performances.

Misconceptions or Confusion: There might be some confusion or unrelated mentions when searching for "DWCS9" due to the acronym potentially relating to other topics or products (like the Delhi Watch Company's model or historical references like the Douglas World Cruiser), but in the context of recent posts and discussions, it's overwhelmingly about the UFC's contender series.

In summary, if you're following or interested in MMA and the UFC, DWCS9 is a crucial event where future stars might make their mark, potentially transitioning from regional scenes to the global stage of the UFC. The event not only serves as a launchpad for fighters but also keeps fans engaged with fresh talent and exciting matchups.

Setting The Table For Tuesday Night’s Action Inside The UFC APEX

August 19, 2024

Season 8 of Dana White’s Contender Series kicked off with a bang last week, literally and figuratively.

In the opening bout of the season, flyweight Lone’er Kavanagh detonated a sharp left hook on the chin of An Tuan Ho midway through the opening round, ending their highly anticipated clash of unbeaten hopefuls in jaw-dropping fashion to start this year’s 10-week run.

Not to be outdone, Jose Delgado followed up by turning his short-notice opportunity against Ernie Juarez into a second-round stoppage win and a call to join the UFC roster, while returning Brazilian Bruno Lopes did the same in his bout with Mikheil Sazhiniani before Mansur Abdul-Malik became the fourth finisher and fourth contract winner of the night with a second-round finish of Wes Schultz to close out the night.

SURVIVOR SERIES NEWS: NXT stars debut in PPV main event angle, plus other news from annual PPV - 18th November 2012

-- NXT champion Seth Rollins (formerly Tyler Black), Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns debuted on WWE TV by attacking Ryback and preventing him from capturing the WWE Title in the Survivor Series PPV main event.

Rollins, Ambrose, and Reigns were identified by announcer Michael Cole as being from the NXT Developmental system. After they took out Ryback via powerbomb through the Spanish announce table, Punk pinned John Cena, who had received Shell Shock from Ryback before Ryback was taken out by the NXT trio.

-- No titles changed hands during the PPV. In the other top title match, Sheamus beat Big Show via DQ after Show pulled referee Scott Armstrong in the way of a Brogue Kick. Sheamus then delivered a massive beat down to Show using a chair, which likely sets up a World Title re-match at the TLC PPV next month.

-- In the other title matches, Antonio Cesaro retained the U.S. Title over Kofi Kingston and Eve retained the Divas Title over Kaitlyn.

-- In the top Survivor Series elimination match, Dolph Ziggler pinned Randy Orton to be the sole survivor for Team Ziggler over Team Foley. Earlier in the show, WWE teased tension between Orton and Mick Foley, playing up their historical feud from Orton's early days. Also earlier in the show, David Otunga was named as Cody Rhodes's replacement on Team Ziggler following Rhodes's injury at last week's Smackdown TV taping.

-- Tamina, who recently trained with The Rock, returned to WWE TV as Vickie Guerrero's hired bodyguard. The set-up was that A.J. Lee noted that if Vickie places her hands on her, then Vickie will be removed as interim Raw authority figure. Tamina then blindsided A.J. and Superfly Splashed her to establish her new role as Vickie's enforcer (Pro Wrestling Torch)

Due to Jones recent drug testing fail it would appear that the obvious place for the match up to happen would be under the WWE umbrella, and what better event to have it take place than WrestleMania.

WWE is always looking for unique, high interest (and grossing) main event matches, and there's little doubt that this dream match would draw massive publicity, and would certainly help sell out an arena (and boost WWE Network subscriber numbers at the same time).

Would the risk of booking such a dream match be worth the potential risk and payoff? Only a few select top brass in the WWE would know, those individuals would be the likes of Vince McMahon and Triple H. Pat Patterson would possibly be in the decision making also, and could very well help book the match, should it be scripted, as all WWE matches are. Or, would the WWE just have these men fight for real? Problem is if its for real, as the WWF Brawl For All was, both men could get seriously hurt and be out of action for many months. Then again, both men would be part-times and are special attractions, so it's not like they have to be out on the road going to arena to arena, following such a bout.

There's also talk whether UFC / MMA sensation Conor McGregor may seriously look at one or more matches under the WWE banner no matter what the result from his clash with Floyd 'Money' Mayweather, who is not a stranger to the WWE ring, having previously fought and beat 'The Big Show' at WrestleMania 24.

It's certainly interesting times for the WWE / Sports Entertainment - MMA - Boxing connection.

Let's all hope that a Lesnar vs Jones and the upcoming McGregor vs Mayweather fight surpass the infamous Ali vs Inoki match from 1976.

As Bruce Buffer says, Let's get ready to rumble. Let's now cross to ringside with Mauro Ranallo for the call of the action.
